Mary Jo has voiced the role of Mrs. Puff, SpongeBob SquarePants teacher, since the Nickelodeon cartoon’s 1999 premiere. She made her off-Broadway debut in 1963 in Along Came A Spider and the following year made her Broadway debut in Hello Dolly! playing Ernestina opposite Carol Channing in New York, and Ginger Rogers on a national tour.

Other Broadway musical credits include: Canterbury Tales; Greenwillow; Different Times; Lysistrata; Fashion and The Pajama Game. Theatre credits include Come Back Little Sheba, (1976 LA Drama Critics Award), Philadelphia Here I Come (1980 L.A. Drama Critics Award); the lead in Annie Get Your Gun; How to Succeed in Business; Romeo & Juliet, Twelfth Night; 27 Wagons Full of Cotton; Naomi Court; Our Town; Beauty and the Beast; Big River; The Full Monty and Nunsense and its many offshoots.
